Loads of people have the belief that those who have Harleys are tough, tattoo laden, testosterone-filled men who guzzle hard liquor and end up in bar room brawls. Even though this image works well in the movies, a vast majority of Harley owners are easygoing, pleasant people who contribute to society.
Harley-davidson has worked very hard to create a community of companionship among persons who own a Harley. The hugely successful Harley-Owners-Group (HOG) has more than 1 million people worldwide. With local divisions around the world, members unite in sharing their obsession for the Harley Davidson way of life.
Harley-davidson owners include males and females ranging in age from 18 to 88. Some harley owners have been riding Harley-davidson bikes for over 50 years. A lot of of the servicemen who fought in WWII became avid lovers of the bike, as they were regularly used for transportation during wartime. A certain number of these servicemen still currently ride.
The female segment of HD owners has significantly risen over the past couple of decades. Maybe the most famed female Harley riders are Avis and Effie Hotchkiss. In 1915, the mother-daughter duo traveled from New York to California on a three speed V-Twin with a sidecar.
A different female trendsetter was Linda Dugeau, co-founder of the Motor Maids, Inc. Linda started riding a Harley-davidson motorcycle in the 1930s. She rode all over America and accounts of her journeys were printed in Motorcyclist magazine. In 1938, Dugeau began establishing a network of female motorcyclists, which officially became The Motor Maids. The organization was chartered with the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) in 1941, making it the oldest bike group for females in North America.
Women of all ages and lifestyles are showing an interest in motorcycles and the lifestyle they offer. Not only are more girls riding street bikes, they are also taking part in bike racing. Female stars, such as singer, Pink and model, Niki Taylor, are getting into the driver’s seat of Harleys and suggesting other girls to ride.
Motorbike riding is quickly becoming a popular family pastime. There is safety equipment available to protect children while riding and include tether straps, helmets, jackets, chaps, and gloves. Touring bikes and cruisers make it relatively easy to take the children on a camping or road trip.
Loads of members of the military are devoted Harley owners. They enjoy the feeling they experience when they get on their bikes and hook up with fellow Harley devotees at sponsored events or charity rides. Harley-Davidson promotes numerous rides for U.S. troops and Veterans.
A common trait of individuals who own Harley Davidson motorcycles is that of a giving disposition. Harley owners often embark on charity rides to assist charitable organizations or to lend a hand to someone in their local community.
Harley enthusiasts have raised millions of dollars in their fundraising efforts and have supported charities dedicated to cancer research, Alzheimer’s research, Autism and a lot of other admirable causes.
There’s a tremendous amount of brotherhood and friendship among Harley riders. They are a group of zealous people who enjoy the thrill of adventure. One thing’s for sure… there’s no other sport that unites such a diverse assortment of people from all backgrounds and age brackets.
